A Brief History on the Scrumptious Dessert
The earliest documentation of the sweet treat was in 1776 when baker, Amelia Simmons wrote down the recipe for a “light cake to bake in small cups” and started what some may say the cupcake revolution. Not to be confused with “cup cake”; in the early 19th century the term cup cake was used for ingredients measured in a cake by volume, and was often called the 1-2-3-4 cake: one cup of butter, two cups of sugar, three of flour, four eggs, etc.
Eventually another type of pastry evolved that was named the “cupcake,” as we know them today that was used to describe any small cake whose size is approximately that of a teacup. Over the course of centuries cupcakes have dominated the baking industry with extravagant icing decorations, out of this world favors, and even having a television show solely about the greatest cupcakes!
